Only just in South Africa, tucked in the corner formed by the Indian Ocean and the Mozambique border, is a place that once experienced, can never be forgotten. Founded by the Methodist Church in 1948 and still maintaining a Christian ethos, Manguzi is perhaps one of the best functioning examples of the District health system in action.
Manguzi offers unique challenges and opportunities to any who would rise to the occasion. Whether you are a Doctor, Physio or Occupational Therapist, Nurse, Laboratory Technician, Radiographer, or Pharmacist (or any other kind of health professional), Manguzi is the place for you.

Manguzi is a 280 bed District (level 1) Hospital, belonging to the Kwa-Zulu Natal Department of Health. Outpatients is by far the busiest section of the hospital seeing approximately 3500 patients per month. OPD includes a Resus Unit (RU) which is used for critically ill medical and surgical patients.

WARDS
Each ward is run by a Ward Doctor and Nursing Ward Managers.

SURGERY
A brand new operating theatre complex has recently been completed with three new anaesthetic machines and copious space. Probably the busiest theatre in the district, we perform:

Laparotomies
Hernia repairs
Hysterectomies
Skin-grafts
Caesarian sections

among others

SATELLITE CLINICS
One of the best aspects of the Manguzi sub district are the well run satellite clinics. There are 10 residential and 30 mobile clinic points (visited by 3 mobile clinic vehicles and accompanying teams). The clinics offer professional nurses a unique opportunity of being able to manage their own patients, with the backup of hospital doctors (who visit the residential clinics once a week) or easy referral to hospital if required.

THERAPY DEPARTMENT
The therapy department (Physio, OT, Speech and hearing, dietetics) sees a whole range of both inpatients and outpatients also visiting both the residential and mobile clinics.

Apart from support from more senior colleagues, Specialist support and advice can be obtained from the Referral Hospitals (Tertiary level), in Empangeni (300km away) and Durban (500km). There are also regular visits from the Red Cross Flying Doctors. There are many on going projects at Manguzi that offer an extra challenge to interested people including a Nutrition Education Project, Psychiatry Clinic, TB and an AIDS team.
